File Viewer allows you to view any file on your Mac. Simply drag and drop any file or folder onto the program window. File Viewer supports playback of many common audio and video formats, and can display many image, Web, and page layout file types. MSG files are often generated by the PC version of Microsoft Outlook. This proprietary format is easily read on other PCs, but it is unrecognizable on Macs – even if you are using Microsoft Outlook for Mac or Apple Mail. ICE Book Reader Professional - 9.6: ICE Book Reader Professional is an ultimate e-book reader and MP3 book creator with native support TXT, RTF, HTML, ePub, MS Word documents, PALM books (.PDB and.PRC) and Microsoft Reader (.LIT files). Optimized for Tablet PC.

Rich Text Format Directory, also known as RTFD (due to its extension.rtfd), or Rich Text Format with Attachments,[1] is a primary document format of TextEdit, an application native to NeXTSTEP[1] and OS X[1] which has also been ported to other versions of Unix. The file format is based on the Rich Text Format, but can also include 'attachments' such as images and animations.

Rtf file extension has Rich Text Format file type, developed by Microsoft, which is associated with the 'text files' category. RTF files commonly include various types of text formatting, including italics, bold type, etc., as well as different sizes and fonts. MSG files are often generated by the PC version of Microsoft Outlook. This proprietary format is easily read on other PCs, but it is unrecognizable on Macs – even if you are using Microsoft Outlook for Mac or Apple Mail. In Mac OS X, RTF files can be opened with TextEdit. To open them, right-click one of these RTF files and choose Open with > TextEdit. They should open correctly. The.RTF file extension stands for rich text format files. This is one of the most common file types and is easily recognizable by most of the word processors. Initially the file type was a proprietary version till the year of 2008.

An RTFD document is a bundle, a folder containing files. It contains a Rich Text file called TXT.rtf that contains Rich Text formatting commands, as well as commands for including images or other attachments contained within the bundle. Images used in the document are stored in the bundle in their native formats.

One big advantage with RTFD is that it supports scalable high quality image formats like PDF, so an RTFD file can print with no information loss at large paper sizes. The standard RTF format also supports a number of scalable image meta file formats. Pdf reader lite.

Rtf File Opener For Mac

Mac OS X[edit]

Like RTF, RTFD files can be opened on Mac OS X, which supports bundles. Mac applications that support RTF and RTFD include Apple's TextEdit and Pages, and a third-party free program called Bean. However, Microsoft's Office for Mac and most other document applications on the platform do not support RTFD.

Microsoft Windows[edit]

In contrast to RTF, RTFD files cannot be opened properly by applications on Windows, which does not support the concept of bundles.

In Microsoft Windows, RTFD files are displayed as folders. Editing these folders may destroy the data inside the RTFD. In particular editing any of the elements, such as the text file, inside the folder will remove other elements, such as graphics. Any text associated with the RTFD file appears in the Windows folder as an RTF file. However, when the RTF file is edited in a text editor such as WordPad, Notepad or Word, graphics elements are replaced by a text notation showing their inclusion and, when saved, the graphics elements inside the folder are 'lost' when the RTFD file is subsequently opened in Mac OS X.[citation needed]

Note that, if the RTFD file is saved as an archive file (.zip, .rar etc.) it can also be 'opened' on Windows using WinZip 8.1 as well as WinRar 3.7.1, meaning the user can extract the contents of the .rtfd file (.pdf, .rtf, .jpg, etc.) and then look at each extracted file using its native application (Acrobat, WordPad, Photo Gallery, etc.). However, as previously stated, some of the contents, such as graphics elements, will be lost after editing when the RTFD file is subsequently re-opened in Mac OS X.

If RTFD is converted to WebArchive on a Mac by using the 'Save As' function in TextEdit, it may be opened and viewed in the web browser Safari even in Windows.

Linux[edit]

In contrast to RTF, RTFD files generally cannot be opened properly by applications on operating systems which do not recognize the bundled data. Most applications and operating environments on Linux, like Windows, treat the bundle as a folder containing unstructured data files.

However, the applications written for the GNUstep environment, such as the Ink text editor, can open these documents[2] and the GNUstep environment itself recognizes the concept of a bundle.

I try to use objective-c codes to read the rtf(has images) on mac osx.I noticed that app Textedit on mac always removes the image info of the rtf file.I check the binary codes of rtf on Windows. rtf file always change the images in to long text strings .

I am not sure if the rtf definition on mac and win have the difference?

Welcome any comment

I may be wrong but I remind that Mac OS X Textedit uses RTFD format when you add images and Windows keep on RTF and puts directly the datas IN the textfile.

RTFD is a package format (it's a folder in fact) and store the images as files and text separately.

You are kind of correct.

Mac address for suprema bio reader. Windows uses and implements the full RTF spec, which allows for embedded images to be written as either Hex code or Hex code converted to binary code.

On Mac, TextEdit will read RTF files just fine but it does not implement the entire spec. Specifically TextEdit ignores RTF streams which have embedded images. This is pure laziness on Apple's part. Instead Apple likes to use RTFD containers which have the image and the RTF code links to that image. Unfortunately these containers do not work in Windows.

What this means? There is no real RTF compatibility between TextEdit and Windows and vice versa. This is a very frustrating problem that has been around for a very long time.

I have filed bug reports with Apple to request that they support the RTF spec. Version 1.9 can be downloaded here.
