  • Moved from #688

    Expected behaviour

With the current master branch of OpenSC (and OpenSSL-1.0.2g):

    Actual behaviour

Inability to even access keys on the PIV token:

    Steps to reproduce

Run the above commands and observe the results.

    Logs

    From towards-0.16.0 branch installation:
    gemalto-0_16_0-bad.txt
    gemalto-bad2.txt
    gemalto-bad4.txt

as opposed to the logs produced by the master branch installation:
    gemalto-good.txt
    gemalto-mail-good.txt

And a log showing failure of a CAC/PIV smartcard on both Gemalto and SCM contact card readers:
    scm+gemalto-both-bad.txt

And here's good log from towards-0.16.0 when bisecting:
    gemalto-good2.txt

*One thing: since I'm not at all experienced with git bisect - first, I'm not sure where to stop, or how to communicate the results, and second, I did not do ./bootstrap at each git bisect {good, bad} round (only at some).

    Further details

Mac OS X 10.11.4. PIV cards. Tokend is used by Mac applications, specifically Keychain Access and Apple Mail. OpenSSL-1.0.2g uses opensc-pkcs11.so library (does not need tokend).

    Q&A

    Gemalto Smart Card Reader

are you running any other PIV or CAC aware card driver software, like http://www.thursby.com/products/pkard-mac on the same machine?

    No I don't.

    Mac

I don't know what other cards (accept maybe Yubico's PIV) https://github.com/mouse07410 has tested with.

I've tested with US Gov't CAC/PIV, and with Yubikey NEO in PIV mode:

    • CAC - in contact mode on both Gemalto Prox Dual USB Reader, and on SCM Microsystems SCR 3310 Reader;
    • NEO - both as a standalone USB reader, and as a card on a contactless Gemalto Prox Dual USB Reader.

All of the above tests failed with OpenSSL (so we haven't even come to interoperating with Tokend). And all of the above tests succeed with with master branch - so the fault is definitely in the 0.16.0 changes somewhere.

    Gemalto Smart Card Driver

You said you get the failure with other readers. Can you send a debug trace using one of the other readers? I know you want to get the dual reader working, but it is not clear to me at least that the problem exists on other readers.

[Un]fortunately, it does. See above, and scm.gemalto-both-bad.txt log file that shows all the four types of interaction attempts (NEO standalone, NEO + Gemalto contactless, CAC + Gemalto contact, CAC + SCM contact).

    Acrobat Reader For Mac

i.e. the problem is not so much in OpenSC, but in the Mac CCID driver.

I strongly doubt this, because (thankfully, so far) the master branch works fine with all of the above, including Gemalto contactless. So by the rule of exclusion, it is exactly OpenSC, and more specifically towards-0.16.0 branch, and even more specifically - not far from the commit 5be51ea :

This could be an endian issue, What processor is your MacOS running on?

    Pdf Reader For Mac

It's 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7. I know, a bit dated - but again, master has no problem with it (unless somebody crafts an update to break it too :).
